How to Write AI Image Prompts: A Practical Structure

AI image prompts work best when subject, action, composition, lighting and style are written as clear visual conditions.

Start with the subject and observable detail

Describe what is in the frame before adding abstract words such as “cinematic” or “premium”. A half-body business portrait, a subject looking at the camera and soft window light are easier for a model to reproduce than a vague request for a beautiful image.

Half-body business portrait, subject looking at the camera, charcoal suit, soft side light from a window, shallow depth of field, 85mm lens, natural skin texture, restrained cool color palette.

Use camera and lighting language

Turn mood into concrete choices: focal length, shot size, light direction, contrast and color temperature. This also makes prompts easier to reuse across models.

A repeatable prompt order

  1. Subject and action.
  2. Composition and camera.
  3. Environment and materials.
  4. Lighting and color.
  5. Medium or visual style.
  6. Tool-specific parameters.
